Ongame’s tournaments have come of age

Jeffrey Haas from Ongame network Poker Classic explains how online tournaments are continuing to grow

Online tournaments, once seen as the lunch break of the poker circuit, are growing in stature. Their scope and scale have grown tremendously during the past year with prize money regularly approaching or surpassing the million-dollar mark. Where weekly guarantees of US $100,000 were impressive a year ago particularly for players seeking a generous overlay – 2006 promise a strong continuation of this spectacular growth.
Larger guarantees, however, are not enough for an online tournament to start out amid the clutter of mid-profile events. To cut through, online poker operators have to start being innovative with the formal and design of their tournament experience.

Enter a Classic

Which is where the Ongame Network Poker Classic comes in. The 2006 Ongame Network Poker Classic will be the first in a series of premium events produced for the exclusive participation of our network operators and their players. In its inaugural year. Ongame will guarantee a US $5m prize pool with at least US $1m going to the tournament champion. This will be the largest –ever guaranteed prize for an online pocker tournament .
The Ongame Network Poker Classic will be a flight tournament that begins on 2 September online and pauses when 45 players remain. The tournament will then resume on 30 September in Spain’s magnificent Casino de Barcelona, where players will battle it out face-to-face. Players will begin the Barcelona event with the same chip stacks they had when the online tournament paused, and the blinds will restart from a low level to maximize participants ’ playing time.
This exclusive even can only be entered  via Ongame Network operators ’ websites. The event has a US $5,000 plus US $200 entry fee, but there will also be a tiered satellite qualification systems where players can gain entry through numerous scheduled multi-table tournaments and sit ’n go events.

Players can proceed through various levels which start at US $1 – so the eventual winner could potentially get a one million percent return on their initial buy-in. One of the most exciting parts for players is the unprecedented generous overlay!   The 45 players who make it to the flight cut-off will have their air travel (puts one) and hotel paid for by Ongame. The value of each package will be around US $5,000 and will not come from the prize pool or players ’ pockets. In addition, every participant at the live event will have some share in the prize pool, making for a boisterous occasion.
Unlike other tournaments which allow a buy-in onsite, no professional players will be allowed to play in Barcelona unless they finish in the top 45 in the online event. This democratic approach will ensure only the best overall player becomes a millionaire. With heavy distributed promotion among our operators and additional marketing from Ongame Network, there should be enough global in interest to have a prize pool greater than the US $5m guarantee. That is what we are aiming for by setting the bar so high.
Ongame Network created this event to support its operators by leveraging their collective global muscle – and our critical mass of player liquidity – to do something greater than any could do on its own. To help further build their businesses, we are providing support in other ways in the coming months. Expect some exciting announcements soon!

Raising the bar

This is a truly radical, inclusive approach which brings the glamour, excitement and big-money stakes of tournament and big-money stakes of tournament poker to a much wider audience and it raises the bar for online poker rooms around the world.

Our partners are reporting a huge amount of interest in the Ongame Network Poker Classic, proving there is a significant appetite for a democratic big money online tournament. For those lucky and skilled enough to reach the last 45, the all-expenses paid weakened in Barcelona promises to be a thrilling climax to the preceding online battles.

We believe the Ongame Network Poker Classic sets the template for online tournaments and are sure it will become a regular fixture in the poker calendar, allowing players of all skill levels around the world to match their skills against each other with US $5m on the line
