Burns sets up specialist services

A specialist service in gambling risk management has been set up by former British Gaming Board deputy chief inspector Derrick Burns, operating out of both the UK and Australia.

Burns, who left the board in 2004, splits his time between his offices in New South Wales, Australia and Berkshire in the UK, operating Derrick Burns Associates.  He has recently completed a paper on gambling controls for the Channel Island of Jersey, which is progressing towards opening up to regulated gaming and also advised some major machine manufacturers on technical subjects.

His main business, however, is in risk management.  “There are a number of people getting into the industry for the first time who have no idea what they are entering and the problems which they will encounter until they have actually spent a great deal of time and money
“What we do is undertake a risk management exercise for them, explaining  the procedures and advising them whether their planned venture is legally or financially viable.”

Tecnoplay scoops award in Malaga

Italian big-hitter Tecnoplay is celebrating its award as Best Foreign Company 2005 from Spanish trade magazine Azar, which it will receive at the Malaga show later this month, Tecnoplay’s MauroZaccharia was buoyed by the number of video and amusement games on show at the ATEI.  As the Italian distributor for  Sega, the traffic on Sega’s stand to see, in particular, House of the Dead 4, Virtua Tennis 3 and Ford Racing Full Blown, gave him much encouragement for the future.  “The Italian market is quiet at the moment,” he stated, “and of course I’d like to see the market grow, but we’re very happy with our relationship with Sega.”
Zaccharia admitted that he liked some of what Namco had to offer and revealed that his company will launch a new casino-style AWP in Rimini.  “New video games and amusement games must be homologated – it’s getting easier for operators in Italy, but not for distributors and manufacturers.”

*  TAB of Austria entertained  150 people from the international coin machine industry to an Awards Night at a London Hotel during the ATEI show – and added a wine tasting as the most appreciated form of hospitality!
The company’s Siegfried Dattl and his sister, Elisabeth Pueringer welcomed their guests and introduced the voting in an ‘Oscars’ format.  First, Siegfried Dattl outlined the background to TAB.  His father (also Siegfried), founded the company in 1962, and built it up, passing it on to his son to continue the good work to this day when the company has 1,200 machines on site in Upper Austria and is manufacturing the Silverball, Maxfire and Virtual Pinball ranges of games on touchscreen technology.  TAB now has 200 employees in its factory  in the Linz area, but its business is truly international with machines located all over the world, many of them attached to “the best online terminal management network in the business.”

He noted that a TAB television spot on Go TV (channel 115 on Astra ) had been seen all over Europe.  In the awards section, with three categories and games and updates as prizes, Leisure Tech of Dubai won the best technical performance category; Bally Wulff of Germany the best marketing award; and best overall performance went to Norditalia of Italy against close competition from Splin of Belgium and Leisure Tech of Dubai
