ITALY FACES MAJOR AWP SHAKE-UP

Major changes in the Italian AWP business designed to compel operators to conform to the monitoring on their machines, have announced.  It will effectively result in a total change-over for the country’s estimated 300,000 AWPs over the next 18 months.  But there is a ‘sweetener’ in the form of a doubling of stakes and prizes.

     

In  a bid to cleanse the market of around 500,000 illegal video pokers, the Italian Government introduced a new AWP law in 2004, which went through a series of fast amendments to cover anomalies and caused great confusion in the market.  Around 100,000 new AWPs went into the market place in that first year and probably double that number since.


      The Government created 10 concessions to companies from Italy and elsewhere to create and install the monitoring networks.  This arrangement will continue and during this year video lottery terminals will also be introduced. 
There are now increased requirement for data from the concessions and an increased specification on the machines so that until such time as the machine has been connected to a network, it will not work.  Effectively, the Government is forcing operators to work in compliance with the regulations.  To take advantage of the uplift in stakes and prizes from 50 cents in and £ 50 out to £ 1 and £ 100 out, operators will have to change their machines.  The fresh specification for new machines includes a device, which can only activate the machine if it is connected to the network.


The new regulation will give operators a sliding scale of overlap time to conform.  Although we understand the details are still a little open to negotiation, at the moment the intention is that machines sold in 2004 will have to be replaced within the next six months; those sold in 2005 have 12 months and those sold in 2006 have 18 months.  The intention of the authorities is clear; they are determined to make those operators who install machines therefore avoiding paying tax – come into line.
The homologation process for the new machines will now insist that they have the ‘inhibitor’ device, which will render the machine inactive unless connected to the network.  Operators may return machines to the manufacturers for modification to the new stakes and prizes and have the inhibitor installed, or buy new.

The many options provided by the linkage are not only an advantage for players but also the operators themselves.  The Photo Play tournament manager, for example, allows tournaments to be set up for the linked terminals of a particular operating location.
  •  Furthermore, players can challenge each other on an international level in the Global Masters, where the Touch of Sports, which stands for challenge, competition and honour, is updated daily. “The multiplayer games’ attraction lies in the fact players can compete against the world,” Funworld’s lise Retzek told InterGame.

UKPHOTO booth operator Photo-me International has won a new five year contract to supply its kiosks to Post Offices across the UK.  Photo-Me will introduce around 400 booths and, additionally, install digital media kiosks for the self-service printing of photographs.  The contract is expected to generate annual revenues of £ 5m for Photo-Me.  The firm has benefited from the growth of digital media kiosks, which allow people to print from digital cameras.  Users can print out pictures by either plugging in their digital camera’s memory card, or by using infrared or Bluetooth wireless technology.  The Post office deal is set to take effect from spring Photo-Me has 33,000 vending sites worldwide, including 20,400 photo booths.

BELGIUM

180 ARCADES are now operating on the new laws demanding that AWPs are hooked up to a central server and their performance is automatically reported to the Gaming Commission.  Operators are reported to be co-operating with the commission.

GERMANY

UKRAINE

Roulette wheel manufacturer Odrex will exhibit at the Malaga shows in Spain and then in Prague.  The company hopes that it expend its European reach beyond its current spread of Russia, UK Spain, Saudi Arabia, Kazahikitan  and Czech Republic.

NAMCO REORGANISATION DATE CONFIREMED

On March 31, Namco Bandai Holdings will establish a new group company under the name of Namco Bandai Games, which will be formed by merging Bandai’s home console game content division with Namco’s home console game content division, its arcade game console content division, its mobile contents business division and part of its new business division.

     

Following this reorganization, Namco Bandai Games will serve as the successor to Namco Ltd.  The functions of the Incubation Center will be given to Namco Ltd, which will focus its activities on amusement facilities.
      Integrating Namco and Bandai’s game contents business will unite Bandai’s know-how for planning and developing linkage with and media promotion of contents that give life to the vision of characters with Namco’s know-how for making the most of technical skills and for undertaking medium and long-term planning and development.  This step represents an attempt to improve the Bandai Namco Group’s planning and development.  This step represents an attempt to improve the Bandai Namco Group’s planning and development capabilities.  It will promote improvements in efficiencies, by making effective use of the resources of both companies, such as their development teams and distribution routes.


      The Bandai Namco Group is divided into five strategic business units: the Toys and Hobby SBU; the Amusement Facility SBU (which manages amusement facilities); the Game contents SBU (which plans and develops home and arcade console game content); the Network SBU (which supplies mobile content); and the Visual and Music content SBU (which produces and distributes video software and content).  The individual SBUs form the basis for the Bandai Namco Group’s pursuit of its business strategies, governed by a management strategyconcept for the group as a whole.

      Following the reorganization, Bandai will be the base company for the Toys & Hobby SBU, Namco for the Amusement Facility SBU, and Namco Bandai Games for the Game contents SBU
